Snake Bites
- Lie the person down and make sure they remain still. Do not let them walk.
- Don't touch the bitten area or wash it clean. Leave it alone.
- Remove all jewellery near the affected area as swelling is likely to occur.
- Bandage affected area from bite downwards to cover the rest of the limb/area to include fingers/toes.
- Do NOT bandage area too tightly. Only need to bandage as you would for a sprain....you do NOT want to stop circulation to the area.
- May use torn clothing, sheets, or even pantihose for bandage.....whatever you can grab fast to do the job will do.
- There is no need to remove clothing from the bitten area.....best if you bandage over so that the person remains still.
- Use a splint/sling to keep person from moving bitten area.....the more movement the quicker the poison is absorbed into the body.
- Do NOT give the person anything to drink.
- Ring 000 as soon as you can. Person NEEDS medical assistance as soon as possible.
- Do NOT let the victim walk... very important.
- If breathing difficulties occur you will need to administer E.A.R ( Expired Air Resuscitation ).
Spider Bites
- For the Funnel Web spider do the same first aid procedure as outlined for snake bites, as the poison for Fennel Web spiders works in the same way as that as snakes.
- For all other Spider bites apply ice or cold pack....or cold wet washer and seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
