Herring – Giant
The giant herring is a long slender streamlined fish, silver in colouration. It has a large forked tail. This particular variety is the largest of the herring family.
Most commonly caught at 1 – 4 kg. Has been known to reach 120cm and weigh in at around 11kg.
Mainly found along the northern coastline – as the waters warm in summer they are also found in more southernly areas along the coast.
A great performer in acrobatics when caught – often leaping into the air – increasing their popularity as a sportsfish with many anglers. They respond well to poppers and lures. The Giant herring will also take live or fresh dead bait.
