A very unusual flat-thin looking fish which takes on a plate-like appearance. This species is scaleless with a circular compressed body. Dory is silver with dark brown dorsal, anal and caudal fins. It has quite a large head and mouth and a long dorsal fin. Colouration varies from shades of green to a grey/black.
Grows to a length of 66cm. and most commonly weigh between 0.6 and 1.4kg.
Dory is found worldwide in cold and temperate waters. Found in the southern waters of Australia from the south of Queensland around to Western Australia, in bays estuaries and harbours.
When fishing for John Dory it’s best to use light line with small baits ( yellowtail, mullet, prawns etc ) and a bean sinker.
