Kingfish – Yellow tail
Also known as Bandit, hoodlum and king. The Kingfish is a very popular sports fish. It is an attractive looking fish whose colouration varies from a blue/purple colour. It has a distinct band of yellow separating this from its white under body. It has a predominant yellow forked tail.
A large fish which weighs in at an average of 4 to 10kg. The Kingfish has been known to exceed 50kg or more.
The yellowtail Kingfish is found from south Queensland to Western Australia, and also down as far as Tasmania. Found both offshore and inshore, around jetties, pylons and rocky reefs.
Kingfish can be caught by trolling, lure and fly fishing and with bait. Most often caught offshore by anglers with hand lines or rod and lines.
