The colouration of these fish depends on the sex. Adult male gropers are a bright blue with darker blue/red lines or blotches around their eyes. Whereas the adult female are green to brown or orange to red in colouration. The juvenile fish of these species are grey/brown in colour. Fins are the same colour as the body for both sexes.
This large fish commonly grows to around 15kg, and in certain area spanning from SA to WA grow well in excess of 30kg.
Found from Victoria up the east coast of Australia to Queensland. Sometimes seen around exposed shallow reefs.
This fish has been a protected species since 1969.
