Tarwhine

Rhabdosargus sarbo

Description:

This fish is often mistaken for bream. The Tarwhine however, has a more noticeably rounded head and a distinctive shimmering gold tone to its scales. This colouration makes the tarwhine look as though it has rows of gold scales. The fins and tail of the tarwhine are tinged yellow.

Size:

Usually around 20cm to 40 cm. Weighing in at 0.2kg to 1.4kg

Where:

Tarwhine can be found in the coastal estuaries, bays, and lakes from southern Queensland down to Victoria and around to Western Australia.

How:

Tarwhine are an easy catch and are not fussy with the bait. No need for fancy rigs - light line, light sinker and a sharp hook - with a basic rig is quite satisfactory for catching Tarwhine.
