This variety of trout has a relatively elongate body with a soft dorsal. The rainbow trout is covered in small dark spots, including the fins and tail (except on the belly ). Most rainbows are dark metallic blue( lake ) or olive-green ( river )in colour fading to a silvery-white belly. They also have a reddish shimmer on the sides which runs down the length of the fish.
Weigh in somewhere between 0.6 and 2kg.
The Rainbow Trout has a more restricted distribution than the Brown Trout. The Rainbow Trout is mainly found in the high coutry of NSW/Victoria and in some areas of Soth Australia, Adelaide and Tasmania.
