Fishing Hooks

Fishing hooks are terminal tackle – no angler would go on any fishing trip without having them in their tacklebox. Although the purpose of the hook is quite simple, the design however can be quite complex depending on varied fishing purposes and preferences.

The most common fishing hooks range in size from 1 to 14 (14 being the smallest ) in the smaller hooks, and from 1/0 to 20/0 in the larger styled hooks ( 20/0 being the largest ). The size of the hook should suit the bait type and the fish being targeted.

Types of fishing hooks

Sliced-shanks/baitkeeper – has barbs along the shank of the hook helping the bait stay in position longer. Comes in sizes 2/0 to 10

Long shanks – particularly used for smaller species of fish. Excellent when using long baits due to the length of the shank. Comes in sizes 4/0 to 14.

Suicide – a multi purpose beak shaped hook with a small shank and an offset eye. Comes in sizes 10/0 to 10.

Treble hooks – are 3 hooks joined along the length of the shank. These hooks are specifically designed for lures. Come in sizes 5/0 to 8.

Circle hooks - popular for gamefishing. Is a rounded shaped hook rather than the usual J shape.

Ganged hooks – a series of hooks which are connected together. Can be purchased pre-linked. Popular with rock and beach anglers.
