Fishing Sinkers

Sinkers are lead weights that come in a variety of shapes, sizes and weights. The main purpose of a sinker is to add weight to the casting line, and to assist in the positioning of the bait for the fish. Sinkers come in a diverse range of weights and designs. There are two basic types of fishing sinkers : those that have an eyelet which the fishing line is tied to, referred to as 'fixed' sinkers, and ones which have a hole running through the centre which the fishing line is threaded through, these are called 'running' sinkers.

Choosing the type and weight of the sinker depends on preference and its ability to do the job. A sinker which is too heavy or light impinges on its casting ability. Also if the sinker is too heavy it will hit and hold bottom. In time the choice of sinker becomes second nature to an avid angler.

Types of sinkers

Barrel - an all-purpose sinker

Split shot – these are the smallest sinkers available. These are small ball shaped weights with a split in the centre which you thread your line through and clamp closed. If split shot needs too be moved unfortunately you must cut and retie the fishing line.

Snapper – heavy sinkers designed to bounce along the bottom. The shape of this sinker helps it to drop easily through the water to the bottom.

Ball – all-purpose sinker for both fresh and saltwater fishing.

Bean – An all-purpose sinker.similar to the Ball sinker but more oval in shape.

Pyramid/star – these sinkers are shaped just as the name suggests. These sinkers are designed to bury themselves into the bottom to keep the line from drifting. These sinkers are mainly used for beach fishing in strong current.
