The Strzelecki Track was discovered and named by Charles Sturt in 1845. It is the unsealed dusty desert route which takes you from Lyndhurst traveling north through harsh country to Innamincka. The track covers a distance of around 466km.

A lot of the journey will take you traveling through desert, so before setting off on your adventure you have to be well prepared with food, water and fuel, as supply stops en route are very limited.

Best time to visit is during the dry season but is always a good idea to check local weather and road conditions before setting out as some parts of the track are impassible and become extremely dangerous in or after wet weather.

Permits are only required to visit Coongie Lakes.

The track can be done by conventional 2WD vehicle however, if you are wanting to take the Old Strzelecki Track a 4WD vehicle is essential. The Old Strzelecki Track runs along the Strzelecki Creek which is worthwhile if you are after the more scenic route.
